In Bed and Awake...

Purposively anticipating every moment that will unfold, I stay wide awake to catch the first glimpse of glory. Leaves fall killing all existing memories, but that does not matter much for I live to make new ones with you.

Forever chasing kismet ...

An Analytic Essay on Schizophrenia in the Human Society

No one wants to be alone; however, it is a social choice. Man has the tendency to choose illusions that will surely cover the imperfections that cloth them. Reality reveals that no one can achieve a perfect life, but dream promises to make it more perfect than you expect it to be. Effectively, it is the reality’s dream that someday, somehow reality will surrender to dream’s shadow.
Man has the ability to create stories that suits his fantasies. They are designed so that the imperfections could be masked even for a short time. It is one practice of democracy that gives colors to man’s life. In some cases, daydreaming is preferable because it counters the harshness life gives. But when fantasy and reality combine in one world, the conflict activates. It happens because the victim is trapped in a scenario that commands him to choose whether to remain sane or to live in falsity. The same scene happens to the schizophrenics. The only difference is that the latter already chooses to be deceived by the paradise of idealism.
Rarely, there are times when an individual creates a world of walls and bitterness after being too smothered by love, which proves that too much of anything could be dangerous. Fantasies are not always on the positive light. Conceivably, these rare cases lead to an escape to the real world; hence, being a captive of illusion.
The concept of deception has long been a scheme that traps preys into an inescapable game. It promises good life, but not for long.
As experts say, schizophrenia causes hazy and uncanny thoughts, perceptions, emotions, movements, and behavior. It is a deviant situation that caused the public to vastly misunderstand the illness for decades. It is not the normal case the society expects; hence, it is unacceptable and a reason for an individual who has this to be sheltered away from the society.
Schizophrenia is never a choice – dreaming and realizing is a choice – schizophrenia is not. Schizophrenics are vulnerable to judgment, though. The society has a judgmental trait. No matter how ignorant it is to a particular situation, it listens to unfounded information then gives its own opinion. The case of the individual being talked about is never a consideration. The society does not mind how the people related to the ill feels; worse, the society does not think of the effect the judgment will bring to the sick.
The society knows a lot of things. In case of schizophrenia, which has been labeled a deviant personality, the society knows that the person possessing the illness performs abnormal ways. The society tends to be irrational and illogical by opining. Had it asked the scientific explanation of the case, it would surely realize that schizophrenia is not to be scared of, but to be prevented. In this case, the society knows a lot of things, though it does not understand anything.
Despite the conveniences modern technology offers, the society is still locked in an old fashioned way thinking and still is close minded, as locked and closed as people with schizophrenia to real world.
Schizophrenia biologically happens, but environmental factors play an important role in shaping schizophrenics. However, though schizophrenia tends to run in families, good social interactions and positively stressful situations may prevent it; otherwise, it might trigger it. If the said mental illness is hereditarily known, more understanding and care is needed. Factually, it does not always happen, because people with the said illness are being institutionalized. At the beginning of the treatment, care and love is still felt, but as time passes, busy schedules and other works hinder the showing of the needed attention.
Often, the teens and young adults are affected by schizophrenia. They are in the awkward stage, where confusion is more likely to arise. Not all in this stage has someone to talk to about what they are going through as well as the guts to share their problem to others. Since they agonize by themselves, every emotional distress is collected in them until such time that they are likely to breakdown.
Some schizophrenic are nonsense. They talk and act senselessly; a proof that schizophrenia is a deviant behavior. What these schizophrenics talked about is not what the normal way of communication in the society is, but what if the nonsense ways the schizophrenics do are the ideas that really talk a lot about life? It is possible, but not applicable. The ideas are already set therefore any difference to it is wrong.
Forgetting things is a disorganized symptom seen in schizophrenics; another deviant personality because man is supposed to remember and forget things seldom. Philosophically, the forgetting-about-things and imagination issue could possibly be a choice, because in reality, things could hurtfully bite anyone and one would really prefer to imagine living in paradise that in pain.
There are subtypes of schizophrenia. Each subtype shows different personality a schizophrenic has. This proves that schizophrenia is a complex disease that suits the complexities of the human brain.
A striking subtype is catatonia. In this subtype, the schizophrenic is generally immobile and unresponsive to the world around him. They often become very rigid and stiff, and unwilling to move. Occasionally, the individual who has this type has peculiar movements like grimacing or assuming bizarre postures. It is also possible that they repeat a word or phrase just spoken by another person.
In a world where comfort zones are hard to find, an individual will surely thrive if one is found. What is the point? The immobility and unwillingness to move of catatonics could show that after thorough searching, the place that makes them happy is finally found. The place where they stop possibly gives them the comfort not found in any other places.
Moreover, treatment to schizophrenia is already available. It may not erase schizophrenia to one’s system, but at least give the individual the chance to face life again, and enable him to perform tasks normally.
The society, no matter how severe its illness, could also be treated if determined enough to be treated so. Like schizophrenia, total cure may not be possible, but at least give normality again to think twice without hindrances. If that happens, those considered as norms could be rechecked and those deviant concepts would be given fair chances to the world.
Schizophrenia is not a good condition, of course. But if viewed from a brighter side, it will reveal that schizophrenia is heaven in hell. All bruising and agonizing pains in the real world are blocked enabling a person to live in a place where he finds peace. Yes, some schizophrenics are able to hurt themselves, but keep in mind that it is more satisfying if hurt comes from own experience rather than hurt because of others hands and accusations.
Again, schizophrenia is treatable, but incurable. Unlike it, the society should be healed from all pretenses and irrationality through proper medications.
As an old saying goes, “there is nothing permanent but change.” Today’s generation may not be good enough to understand all scientific and earthly circumstances, but in the future, it is never impossible that it will transform into a more mature and logical environment. Likewise, though schizophrenia does not have total cure, its treatment could be permanent as technology continuously improve.
Illusions could be occasionally good, but if it becomes a means of escape to the cruel society, then it is wrong. The change in the society will start from one individual, and eventually everyone will follow.
